I am always looking for movement in my subjects. This swan with wings outspread has just landed on a turbulent lake. I liked the challenge of capturing that moment before he folds his wings in. I had mixed this periwinkle tint for another painting and wanted to work with it more. The simple changes in tint on the swan and the sky feel peaceful, in contrast to the white caps you see on the water. I wanted those subtle tint differences to stand alone. A piece of the sky has landed on the water.—Donald Ryker
