Harley

Close-up of a Blue Full Dress Harley Davidson motorcycle on a yellow background. Large Painting by artist Donald Ryker in textured expressionist impressionist art style with unique impasto glaze technique.

My Uncle and now my Aunts run an HD shop in Oregon. My Dad has had a motorcycle since before I was born and my older sister had fun riding around the block on the back. When I came along and had CP he tried to strap me on but decided that a side car would be better. It was a good excuse to order a brand new motorcycle and matching side car!

I decided to challenge myself to paint something man-made. Man made subjects have straight lines and corners and symmetry. Natural subjects have biomorphic shapes and are forgiving of my free form brush strokes. My first choice for a man made subject was a motorcycle.

I used a photo and sketched in charcoal then painted freehand. I chose to graduate the color from blue to purple to show the shapes and curves reflecting light. I used a stencil made from painters tape to paint the highlights. Yellow was a natural choice for the background to make the motorcycle pop and because I am all about color.

This is the first painting to have my new logo – the hardhat – in the lower right corner – Donald Ryker
